A moment of unexpected vulnerability from Ravine reveals a softer side beneath her hardened exterior, touching Tina deeply.
The biting wind whipped Tina’s hair across her face, a familiar sting that usually brought a smile. Tonight, though, the chill felt sharper, a reflection of the icy unease that had settled in her chest. They were in Ravine’s apartment, a place that always felt more like a gilded cage than a home. The plush velvet furniture, the heavy damask curtains, the scent of expensive perfume mingling with something metallic and dangerous – it was a world away from the cozy, slightly cluttered warmth of her own family’s house.
Ravine sat across from her, a tumbler of amber liquid cradled in her hand. Her usual mask of imperious control had slipped, just a fraction. Her dark eyes, so often like chips of obsidian, held a flicker of something Tina couldn’t quite name. Sadness? Regret? It was a fleeting expression, gone as quickly as it appeared, leaving behind the familiar, impenetrable facade.
“You are quiet tonight, malyshka,” Ravine murmured, her Russian accent thick, twisting the syllables into a soft, guttural caress. “What is in head?”
