Chapter 16
A Glimpse of Elena
A wise, observant woman named Elena crosses their path, offering cryptic insights into Ravine's past and the dangerous world she inhabits.
The crisp air of Tromsø always held a certain magic for Tina, a crispness that seemed to scrub away the grime of the everyday and leave behind a sparkling clarity. This evening, however, the clarity was tinged with a nervous flutter, a constant hum beneath her skin that had been present since Ravine had left her apartment that morning. Ravine, with her impossibly sharp cheekbones and eyes that held the depth of a winter sea, had left behind a silence that felt louder than any noise.
Tina found herself drawn to the waterfront, the rhythmic lapping of the waves against the wooden pilings a soothing balm. She hugged her worn denim jacket tighter, the familiar chill of the Arctic night seeping into her bones, a stark contrast to the heat that Ravine ignited within her. It had been a whirlwind, this entire entanglement. From their first, almost accidental meeting, to Ravine’s blunt, almost brutal propositions, Tina had been pulled into a vortex she hadn’t anticipated. She'd expected a fling, a temporary distraction, perhaps even a painful lesson. What she hadn’t expected was this unsettling pull, this dizzying dance of submission and desire.
Ravine’s words, spoken in that gravelly, accented English, echoed in her mind: “You… very stubborn. I like this. Makes it more… interesting.” Interesting. Tina supposed that was one word for it. Another might be terrifying. Ravine’s temper, a volatile storm that could erupt without warning, was a constant threat. Yet, beneath the fury, there was a raw honesty, a complete lack of pretense that Tina found herself strangely drawn to. It was a dangerous attraction, she knew, like a moth to a flame, but she couldn't seem to pull away.
