The fluorescent lights of the precinct hummed a monotonous tune, a stark contrast to the frantic energy that usually pulsed through these halls. I stared at the corkboard, a chaotic mosaic of crime scene photos, victim profiles, and scribbled notes. Each image of a fallen hunter, a trophy taken, a life extinguished, was a fresh wound. Jack was across the room, hunched over a laptop, his brow furrowed in concentration. He’d been like that for hours, a digital bloodhound sniffing out digital trails. I, on the other hand, preferred the tangible, the scent of stale coffee and ozone that clung to the evidence.
“Anything?” I asked, my voice a low rumble, barely disturbing the quiet.
Jack didn’t look up. “Just dead ends, Ramirez. Social media trails go cold, financial records are clean. This guy is a phantom.”
