Aris encounters the first of the ancient civilization's protective measures—puzzles and traps designed to test intruders' worthiness.
The air in the chamber was thick with the scent of dust and something else, something ancient and mineral, like petrified starlight. Aris Thorne, his heart thudding a frantic rhythm against his ribs, traced the intricate carvings on the stone wall. They pulsed with a faint, internal luminescence, a ghostly echo of the civilization that had etched them into existence. He had followed the cryptic symbols, the riddles whispered by Old Man Yusuf, and the unsettling feeling that he was being watched, all the way to this subterranean sanctuary. This was it, the threshold he had only dared to dream of.
He held up the small, obsidian disc he had found nestled within the sarcophagus of a long-forgotten chieftain. It was one of the keys, he was certain. The symbols on its surface mirrored those on the wall, a celestial map, or perhaps a complex lock. His fingers, stained with the grime of ages, trembled as he aligned the disc with a specific indentation in the stone. A low, guttural grinding sound reverberated through the cavern, a sound that felt less like machinery and more like the awakening of a slumbering giant.
“Remarkable,” he breathed, the word lost in the vastness of the space. He wasn’t alone in his awe, but the others here were not seekers of knowledge. They were predators. He could feel their presence, a cold, predatory awareness that prickled the hairs on the back of his neck. Elara Vance. He hadn’t seen her since the desperate chase through the dusty marketplace of Gşzem, but her shadow loomed large, a palpable threat.
