Chapter 7
Deciphering the Past
Through intense study, Aris begins to decipher the strange symbols. They reveal a complex network of underground chambers, the heart of the lost civilization.
The air in the small, rented room in Gşzem was thick with the scent of old paper and Aris’s own mounting frustration. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the grime-streaked window, illuminating the scattered artifacts and the chaotic spread of his notes. Days had bled into nights, each sunrise finding him hunched over the strange, metallic tablets, his mind a whirlpool of theories and dead ends. The symbols, etched with an impossible precision, mocked him with their alien beauty. They were unlike anything he’d encountered in his extensive career, no recognizable precursor to cuneiform, no echo of hieroglyphs. This was something else entirely.
He ran a hand over his tired eyes, the stubble on his chin rough against his palm. The weight of Yusuf’s cryptic pronouncements and the chilling brush with Agent Kaelen had settled deep within him, a persistent hum of unease beneath the academic fervor. He knew, with a certainty that bordered on obsession, that these artifacts held the key to something monumental. But the lock remained stubbornly shut.
He picked up one of the smaller discs, its surface cool and strangely smooth. The symbols here seemed to form a narrative, a sequence that hinted at more than just ornamentation. He’d spent hours comparing them, cross-referencing, searching for patterns, for any familiar linguistic structure. Nothing. It was like trying to decipher a language spoken by the stars.
