The late afternoon sun cast long, distorted shadows across the dusty track as Aris Thorne urged his rented Fiat through the winding mountain roads. The engine sputtered a protest, a sound that mirrored the knot of unease tightening in his gut. He’d been too confident, too eager to dismiss the unsettling feeling that had settled upon him since leaving the village. Yusuf’s words, veiled in parable and prophecy, echoed in his mind: “The stones remember, and some awaken to a hunger.” He’d dismissed it as local superstition, the romantic embellishment of an elder guarding his ancestral land. Now, he wasn't so sure.

The message from the shadowy organization had been chillingly direct, a digital whisper in his secure inbox: "The artifacts are not yours to possess. Return them, or face the consequences." It had been laced with a veiled threat, a promise of swift and decisive action. He’d initially attributed it to a rival collector, a desperate attempt to reclaim what they believed was theirs. But the sheer audacity, the knowledge of what he carried, pointed to something far more organized, far more dangerous.

He glanced in the rearview mirror, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. Nothing. Just the empty, undulating landscape of Anatolia, painted in hues of ochre and burnt sienna. Yet, the feeling persisted, a prickling sensation on the back of his neck, a phantom breath on his skin. He’d felt it before, a hunter’s intuition honed by years of navigating treacherous dig sites and outwitting less scrupulous academics. This was different. This was the predatory gaze of something that knew exactly what it was hunting.
