Chapter 5
Whispers and Warnings
Yusuf shares fragmented local legends, cryptic warnings about disturbing ancient powers. Aris, initially skeptical, begins to sense a deeper truth in the folklore.
The air in Yusuf’s small dwelling was thick with the scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke, a familiar aroma that clung to the ancient stones of Gşzem. Aris sat on a low stool, the rough wool of his trousers scratching against his skin, a stark contrast to the smooth, cool surface of the artifact he’d carefully placed on the worn wooden table between them. It was one of the smaller pieces, a shard of obsidian etched with the same impossibly intricate symbols that had ignited his obsession. Yusuf, his face a roadmap of a life lived under the relentless Anatolian sun, regarded the shard with eyes that seemed to hold the wisdom of centuries.
“You seek what lies beneath,” Yusuf began, his voice a low rumble, like stones shifting in the earth. He didn’t look at Aris, his gaze fixed on a point somewhere beyond the cluttered room, perhaps on the very secrets Aris was trying to unearth. “But some things are best left undisturbed, like the roots of an old tree. They hold the soil, but they also anchor the darkness.”
Aris felt a familiar prickle of impatience, a sensation he usually suppressed with practiced ease. He had come here for answers, for tangible evidence, not for parables. “Yusuf, I respect your traditions, but these symbols… they speak of a civilization far beyond anything we understand. This isn’t just folklore; it’s history waiting to be revealed.”
