The air, thick with the dust of millennia, clung to Aris like a shroud. Each ragged breath burned in his lungs, a testament to the violent upheaval that had nearly claimed him. He was alive, a fact that still felt tenuous, a fragile thread pulled taut against the abyss. The collapse had been cataclysmic, a symphony of groaning stone and screaming metal that had echoed the primal fears buried deep within him. He remembered the blinding flash of the final mechanism, the earth’s violent shudder, and then… darkness.

Now, a muted, diffused light filtered from somewhere far above, a promise of the world he had so recently left behind. He pushed himself up, his body a symphony of aches and protests. His left arm throbbed, a deep, insistent pain that spoke of a nasty gash, already beginning to crust with dried blood. His clothes were ripped and stained, a testament to his desperate scramble for survival. He was a mess, a walking ruin, but he was *out*.

He stumbled towards the faint luminescence, his boots crunching on loose scree. The air grew fresher with each step, carrying with it the faint, earthy scent of the surface. He could almost taste the sunlight, a sensation he’d once taken for granted, now a luxury he craved with an almost spiritual intensity. He thought of Elara, of Kaelen, of the inferno they had unleashed in their blind pursuit of power. He hoped, with a fierce, burning intensity, that they had not survived. The thought brought a grim satisfaction, a fleeting moment of peace in the turmoil of his mind.
