The air, thick with the scent of ozone and something else, something ancient and metallic, began to hum. It was a low thrum at first, a vibration that Aris felt more in his bones than heard with his ears, but it grew, escalating into a resonant growl that shook the very foundations of the subterranean complex. Dust, disturbed by the tremor, rained down from the vaulted ceiling, catching the beams of his headlamp in a shimmering cascade. This was not the gentle settling of aged stone; this was a violent rejection.

“What’s happening?” Aris shouted, his voice swallowed by the rising cacophony. He scrambled back from the central pedestal, the final artifact—a crystalline shard pulsing with an internal light—still clutched in his trembling hand. The intricate carvings on the walls, once so full of meaning, now seemed to writhe and distort in the flickering light, as if the very language of this lost civilization was screaming in protest.

A deep groan echoed from the bowels of the earth, followed by a sickening crunch. A fissure, thin as a spiderweb, snaked across the polished floor, widening with alarming speed. Aris’s heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the symphony of destruction. He had been so consumed by the revelation, by the sheer magnitude of what lay before him, that he had neglected the most fundamental rule of archaeology: respect the site. Had he triggered some ancient failsafe? Or was this simply the inevitable decay of a place left undisturbed for millennia, now violently awakened?
