Its branches, once skeletal fingers reaching from the earth, now thrashed with a life that defied the oppressive gloom of the hidden chamber. Prince Theron stood beside me, his face a mask of awe and terror, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword as if it were his only anchor in this maelstrom of power.
“Corvus,” he breathed, his voice a mere whisper against the rising crescendo, “What is happening?”
I wanted to tell him everything, the culmination of our desperate chase, the sorcerer’s final gambit, the breaking of chains that had bound me for centuries. But the curse, blessedly, was already loosening its grip, the words forming in my mind not as a forced utterance, but as a choice, a gift. “It is Elara’s greed, Theron,” I said, and the sound of my own voice, unforced, unbidden, was a melody I hadn’t heard in an age. “She sought to control its power, but its true nature is not to be commanded, only to be understood.”
