The air in the village square hung thick and heavy, not just with the usual scent of woodsmoke and damp earth, but with a palpable anxiety that clung to everything like dew. Emerielle’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a wild bird trapped within a cage of bone. Beside her, Luke’s hand, calloused and strong, offered a silent anchor, his presence a comforting warmth against the chill of fear that had settled over her people. They had returned, not with the miraculous cure the elders had hoped for, but with a truth that felt far more fragile, and infinitely more dangerous.

Elder Maeve stood before them, her face a mask of etched lines and unwavering resolve. The villagers, a huddled mass of worried faces, turned their gazes from the sky, where the perpetual glow of the Forever Moon cast an eerie, unwavering light, to the two figures who dared to stand against the tide of their fear. The whispers, which had been a low murmur of concern, now sharpened into a chorus of suspicion.

“You return empty-handed,” Elder Maeve’s voice, usually a soothing balm, was now sharp as a shard of ice. “The sacred herbs… they failed you?”
