The acrid scent of smoke still clung to the air, a phantom limb of the terror that had gripped Willow Creek. Lilly moved through the hushed streets, her footsteps unnervingly loud on the debris-strewn cobblestones. The once vibrant market square was a tableau of devastation, stalls overturned, wares scattered like fallen leaves after a storm. Yet, amidst the ruin, a strange stillness had settled, a heavy silence that felt more menacing than the shrieks of panic that had echoed hours before.

Her parents, their faces etched with a weariness that went deeper than sleep deprivation, had been clinging to her since the dust had cleared. Its wide, terrified eyes had met hers, and a soft purr, impossibly loud in the silence, had rumbled through its small body. Lilly had stared at her hands, bewildered. The warmth had receded, leaving behind a faint tingling, an echo of something she couldn’t name.
