The air grew thin and sharp as Lilly climbed, each breath a sting against her lungs. Behind her, Willow Creek was a distant smudge of green, a memory fading with the rising altitude. Ahead, the jagged peaks clawed at the bruised twilight sky, their snow-capped summits like the teeth of some ancient, slumbering beast. The Whispering Woods had spat her out, a whirlwind of rustling leaves and spectral whispers, leaving her with the weight of Elias’s cryptic words and the gnawing urgency of her quest. The Shadow Weaver’s tendrils were reaching, he’d said, and this mountain pass, the Serpent’s Coil, was a vital artery, a gateway to the lands beyond. If it fell, the darkness would flow unimpeded.

Her boots crunched on scree, the sound unnervingly loud in the growing silence. The wind, a mournful dirge, whipped strands of hair across her face, stinging her eyes. She pulled her worn cloak tighter, the rough wool a meager defense against the encroaching chill. Elias had warned her. “The Serpent’s Coil is not merely a geographical obstacle, Lilly. It is a threshold. And thresholds are guarded.” She hadn’t pressed him for details, a familiar unease settling in her gut. Elias, for all his wisdom, often spoke in riddles, his pronouncements laced with the scent of forgotten ages.

The path narrowed, clinging precariously to the mountainside. Below, the world dropped away into a dizzying chasm, shrouded in mist. Above, the peaks loomed, their stony faces impassive, indifferent to her struggle. A primal fear, cold and sharp, pricked at her. This was a different kind of fear than the creeping dread that had permeated Willow Creek. This was the raw, elemental terror of nature’s unforgiving grandeur, of being a fragile speck in a colossal, indifferent landscape.
