The air grew thin and sharp as Lilly climbed, each breath a sting against her lungs. Behind her, Willow Creek was a distant smudge of green, a memory fading with the rising altitude. Her boots crunched on scree, the sound unnervingly loud in the growing silence. The wind, a mournful dirge, whipped strands of hair across her face, stinging her eyes.
