The air thinned with each upward step, the familiar scent of pine and damp earth giving way to a sharper, more mineral tang. Chris found himself climbing higher than he ever had, the village of Oakhaven a mere smudge of worried lights far below. The ancient map, brittle and smelling of ages, felt strangely warm in his hand, a guide through the labyrinthine paths of the Whispering Peaks. The crimson sky, a constant companion since the blight began, seemed to press down here, its unnatural hue bleeding into the very stone of the mountains. A figure emerged from the doorway, silhouetted against the dim interior. He was impossibly old, his frame stooped but his presence radiating a quiet strength. His beard, a cascade of silver, reached his waist, and his eyes, though clouded with age, held a startling clarity, like ancient pools reflecting a forgotten sky. He moved with a slow, deliberate grace, his bare feet padding silently on the rough ground.
