Chapter 18
Secrets in the Moonlight
Driven by a desire to understand Valerius more fully, Elara explores his imposing manor under the soft moonlight. Behind a tapestry depicting an ancient hunt, she discovers a hidden passage, a secret entrance leading to forgotten chambers. Dust motes dance in the slivers of light revealing ancient artifacts, cryptic journals, and ancestral portraits that hint at a lineage far more complex and perhaps more dangerous than she imagined. The mystery of Valerius's past, and its connection to his curse, is far from unraveled.
The moonlight, a sliver of silver against the bruised velvet of the night sky, was my only companion as I slipped through the unlocked service entrance of Valerius's manor. The heavy oak door groaned a protest, a sound swallowed by the vast silence within. Every instinct screamed at me to turn back, to retreat to the familiar warmth of my cottage, but a deeper, more insistent pull held me fast. Valerius. His secrets were a tangled web, and I, the village herbalist, felt an irresistible urge to unravel them, to understand the man who had so irrevocably altered the landscape of my life.
The air inside was cool, carrying the scent of aged wood, dried flowers, and something else… something metallic, like old blood. It prickled my skin, raising gooseflesh despite the thick wool of my shawl. Shadows clung to the corners of the grand foyer, stretching and distorting the opulent furnishings into monstrous shapes. A single, ornate candelabra on a nearby console table held a few flickering candles, their flames casting dancing, elongated figures on the tapestried walls. I moved with the quiet stealth of a forest creature, my worn leather boots making no sound on the polished stone floor.
My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat of both fear and exhilaration. Each creak of the house, each sigh of the wind outside, sent a jolt through me. I knew I shouldn’t be here. Valerius had warned me of the dangers that lurked not only outside but within his own shadowed existence. Yet, the allure of his mystery was a siren’s call, drawing me further into the labyrinth of his home.
