The warehouse air hung thick and still, smelling of dust, old oil, and something else, something metallic and sharp that pricked at Elias’s senses. He’d chosen this place, a forgotten husk on the edge of a forgotten town, for its silence, its anonymity. But silence, he’d learned, was a luxury he could no longer afford. The heavy footsteps echoing in the cavernous space were a testament to that. They weren’t the hurried, uncertain steps of someone lost, but the measured, deliberate tread of a hunter.

He shifted his weight, the worn leather of his boots whispering against the concrete floor. His knuckles, already rough from countless unseen jobs, tightened around the cold, smooth metal of the wrench he held. It was a pathetic weapon against whatever was coming, but it was all he had. The baseball cap was pulled low, the dark lenses of his sunglasses a second skin, obscuring eyes that had seen too much, too often. He was Elias, a ghost in worn denim, a whisper on the wind, perpetually moving, perpetually looking over his shoulder. Stella. Her name was a constant ache, a phantom limb. He touched the inside pocket of his jacket, where the worn photograph lay, a faded smile captured in time.

The footsteps stopped. A voice, smooth as polished obsidian, cut through the quiet. "Elias. Or should I call you by another name? It’s been a long time."
