The air in the cramped bus station felt thick, heavy with the stale scent of diesel and desperation. Elias nursed a lukewarm coffee, the bitter liquid doing little to soothe the gnawing unease in his gut. He’d been here for an hour, ostensibly waiting for a bus that was perpetually delayed, but really, he was waiting for the world to stop spinning, just for a moment, so he could catch his breath. The worn photograph, tucked deep in his breast pocket, felt like a stone against his heart. Stella. Her smile, captured in a sun-drenched moment years ago, was a cruel taunt against the grey reality of his existence.

He’d learned to live in the in-between places, the forgotten towns and roadside diners where no one asked too many questions. His face, perpetually obscured by the low brim of his baseball cap and the dark lenses of his sunglasses, was a fortress. He was a ghost, drifting through life, leaving no trace but the faint, almost imperceptible inscription on the worn leather of his wallet – Stella. It was a mantra, a prayer, a curse.

The cryptic message, delivered by a prepaid burner phone left anonymously in his motel room, had been a jolt of ice water. They know. Stella. Danger. Move. The words, stark and brutal, had echoed the fear that had been his constant companion for so long. They knew. The implication hung in the air, a palpable threat. And Stella. The name, always the name, a beacon and a storm.
