The midday sun beat down with a relentless ferocity, each ray a tiny hammer against Elias’s battered fedora. He squinted, not just against the glare, but against the gnawing unease that had become a constant companion. The worn leather of the steering wheel felt familiar beneath his calloused hands, a small anchor in the ceaseless drift of his life. He’d learned to read the land, to find the forgotten roads, the places where shadows clung longer and questions rarely followed. This stretch of highway, shimmering with heat haze, was no different. Just another nameless town, another anonymous job, another day spent blending into the background.

He pulled into a dusty lot behind a diner that smelled faintly of stale coffee and fried onions. The kind of place where the waitresses knew everyone’s name, and strangers were eyed with a polite, but firm, curiosity. Elias preferred to be the stranger. It was safer. He kept his face hidden, the brim of his hat pulled low, the dark lenses of his sunglasses a shield against prying eyes. He’d cultivated this anonymity like a rare, fragile plant, tending to it with constant vigilance. It was the only thing he had left, the only defense against the ghosts that stalked his waking hours.

He pushed open the diner door, the bell above it giving a cheerful, jarring chime. The sudden shift from the searing heat to the cool, dim interior made his eyes water. He slid into a booth by the window, the cracked vinyl cool against his forearms. A waitress, her apron stained with the day’s battles, ambled over. “What can I get for ya, hon?”
