The blood-red moon, no longer a monstrous, pulsating orb but a gentle, blushing crescent, cast a soft, silvery light over the forest. It was the kind of light that made you want to hum a little tune and maybe skip, if you weren't a witch who’d just wrestled a spectral party-planner into submission. The air, which had been thick with grumpy spectral energy and the scent of impending doom (and slightly burnt popcorn, thanks to Bartholomew), now smelled like damp earth and the sweet decay of fallen leaves. It was, in a word, perfect.

I stretched, feeling the familiar hum of autumn magic thrumming through my veins. It wasn't the frantic, backfiring zap of a few nights ago, but a deep, resonant thrum, like a cello playing a perfectly tuned note. My lineage, the one that made me a leaf-whisperer and a general autumn enthusiast, felt solid and strong again. It felt like *mine*. And that, more than anything, made me feel like I could finally breathe.

Bartholomew, perched on a mossy log and looking remarkably less like he’d just been through a spectral shakedown, cleared his throat. It was more of a hollow, woody rattle, but he seemed to think it was sophisticated. "Well, that was certainly an experience," he drawled, his voice like dry leaves skittering across pavement. "Though I maintain my joke about the ghost and the spectral disco ball was a solid ten out of ten. You just weren't ready for that level of wit."
