Chapter 11
The air thrummed, a low, anxious hum that vibrated right through my boots and up into my teeth. The blood-red moon, a giant, bruised fruit hanging in the ink-black sky, seemed to pulse with a malevolent energy. Bartholomew, perched precariously on my shoulder, let out a little squeak. “You know,” he grumbled, his voice a low rumble that tickled my ear, “if this party goes on forever, I’m going to need a bigger hat. And possibly a nap. This eternal revelry is *exhausting*.”
I ignored him, my fingers tracing the faded gilt lettering on the cover of Grandma’s “spiciest” spellbook. “Spicy,” she’d called it. I’d always imagined it involved a lot of cinnamon and maybe a dash of dragon pepper. Turns out, “spicy” in witch language means “capable of unravelling the fabric of reality and possibly causing spontaneous combustion.” Honestly, could she not have gone with “dangerously powerful and likely to explode”? It felt more accurate.
