The apartment felt cavernous now, echoing not with Deon’s loaded questions or the sharp, sudden clatter of something ‘accidentally’ knocked over, but with the gentle hum of the refrigerator and the distant sounds of city life that Rene hadn't truly heard in months.

She stood in the center of the living room, a room that still bore the faint, lingering scent of Deon’s expensive, yet strangely metallic, cologne, and finally allowed herself to breathe. It wasn't a full, deep breath—not yet—but a tentative inhale, testing the air for invisible surveillance wires or the sudden threat of a door slamming open.

The first day had been a blur of numb motion. Packing only the essentials: clothes that she hadn't realized she’d been careful not to wear because they might ‘provoke’ him, her worn copy of *Leaves of Grass*, and the small, silver locket her grandmother had given her—the one Deon had insisted on keeping in his safe because he didn’t trust her ability to safeguard her own things. She hadn't argued. Arguing was part of the tightening noose.
