The Missing Toy

Alice 'borrows' Olivia's favorite doll, hoping Mom will notice her playing with it. When the doll is found, Mom is a little cross with Alice, not realizing her intention. Olivia is confused but kind.

The sun, a golden eye peeking over the rooftops, cast long shadows across Alice’s bedroom floor. It was a new day, and with it, a fresh wave of determination washed over Alice. Today, she would show Mom how special she was. Not just *special*, but *extra* special. The kind of special that made Mom’s eyes light up, the kind that made her say, “Oh, Alice, you are just the most wonderful girl!”

Her gaze drifted to Olivia’s bed, a neat little haven of pastel blankets and stuffed animals. Olivia’s favorite doll, Princess Sparkle, sat perched on her pillow, her yarn hair a cascade of rainbow colors, her button eyes twinkling. Princess Sparkle. Mom had bought her that doll, Alice remembered, cooing over how pretty she was. Mom always cooed over Olivia’s things.

An idea, a tiny spark of mischief, flickered in Alice’s mind. If Mom noticed her playing with Princess Sparkle, if she saw how gentle and careful Alice was, maybe then Mom would see *her*. Really see her.
