The city pulsed beneath a sky the color of bruised plums, a symphony of distant sirens and the low thrum of a million lives lived in parallel. I traced the condensation on my glass, the ice clinking a lonely rhythm against the rim. It was the kind of night that amplified the quiet ache in my chest, the hollow space where a name should have been whispered, a hand should have been held. Sol. The name itself was a soft detonation in the stillness, a feeling I couldn't quite articulate, only feel. It was in the sharp, unexpected tilt of his head when he was listening, the way his green-streaked black hair caught the dim light, the almost imperceptible shift in his crimson gaze when he looked my way.

We’d met, or rather, our orbits had finally collided, at that… place. A place that didn’t exist on any map, a sanctuary for the unseen, the unheard. It was a gamble, a dive into the underbelly of the city where the air was thick with a shared sense of otherness, and where, for the first time, I felt a flicker of recognition, a sense that I wasn’t entirely alone in my invisibility. And then there was Sol. He was a shadow even in the shadows, a silence that spoke volumes. I’d watched him, mesmerized, as he navigated the throng with an almost predatory grace, his dark clothes a second skin, his presence a magnetic force I found myself inexplicably drawn to.

Tonight, the memory of that night, of him, felt particularly potent. I’d gone to that same underground event again, a foolish hope clinging to me like the damp night air. I’d told myself it was about the music, the atmosphere, the escape. But I knew, deep down, it was about him. And he’d been there. We hadn’t spoken, not really. Just a shared glance across the crowded room, a fleeting nod, the unspoken acknowledgment of something electric passing between us. It was enough to leave me reeling, to send my thoughts spiraling into a dizzying dance of what-ifs.
