Chapter 4
The Architect's Shadow
Coincidences pile up: a misplaced item returned, a shared interest discovered. Sol feels a strange sense of being guided, Crow sees destiny.
The city breathed a sigh, a low hum of traffic and distant sirens that was the soundtrack to my perpetual invisibility. Another Tuesday, another shift folding shirts that would be unfolded by strangers within hours. My fingers, long and accustomed to the familiar texture of cheap cotton, paused. A small, tarnished silver locket lay nestled in the crease of a polo shirt. It wasn't mine. I’d never seen it before. Purple eyes, deep and expressive, scanned the page. I’d seen him around, of course. His quiet intensity, the way he seemed to carry an unspoken melancholy, had drawn my attention more than once. We were both specters in the periphery of other people’s lives, two ships passing in the night, never quite on the same course.
