Manufactured or True?
Faced with the truth, Sol and Crow question the authenticity of their feelings. Was their love real, or a product of manipulation?
The air in the cramped apartment felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the weight of a revelation that had landed between us like a fallen star, burning and brilliant and terrifying. The note, clutched in my hand, was a phantom limb, its edges sharp against my skin even though I’d read it a dozen times. *“It was all for you. For this. For them.”* Them. Us.
Crow sat across from me, his long braid a dark river against the worn fabric of the sofa. His purple eyes, usually so alive with a gentle curiosity, were clouded, searching my face as if I held the answers to a riddle that had suddenly become too complex for us both. He’d read the note too, of course. We’d found it tucked beneath a loose floorboard, a secret whispered from the shadows of our lives.
“So,” he began, his voice a low murmur that struggled to cut through the silence, “it’s all… a performance?”
