The city breathed a damp, metallic sigh as evening bled into night. Rain slicked the asphalt, turning streetlights into hazy halos, and the air, thick with the scent of exhaust and something vaguely floral, clung to my skin. I found myself walking, a familiar, aimless pilgrimage through the labyrinthine streets of the lower district, the kind of place where shadows clung a little too tightly and secrets felt as common as stray cats. My dark clothes, a second skin I’d long since accepted, felt both a comfort and a shroud. It was in these forgotten corners, away from the glare of ordinary life, that I felt most myself, or perhaps, most aware of what I was missing.

He stood near the bar, his long braid a dark waterfall against his equally dark shirt, his purple eyes, usually so expressive, held a flicker of something I couldn’t quite decipher. He was talking to someone, a brief, animated exchange, but his gaze, for a fleeting moment, met mine across the crowded room. There was a jolt, a silent recognition that bypassed words, that familiar pull that left me breathless and unnerved.
