The Obstacle Course

The air in the alley hummed with a dissonant melody, a soundtrack to the city’s hidden life. I’d learned to find comfort in these forgotten spaces, places where the neon glow of the main streets didn’t reach, where the noise of the world faded into a murmur. It was here, amidst the graffiti and the scent of damp concrete, that Crow and I had first truly seen each other. Not just a glance, but a recognition, a shared understanding of being unseen.
Tonight, however, the familiar quiet was tinged with a new, unsettling tension. We were supposed to meet at our usual spot, a tucked-away alcove behind the old theatre, a place we’d claimed as our own. I’d arrived early, as I always did, a habit born of years spent observing, waiting for my moment. But the alcove was empty. Not just empty of Crow, but empty in a way that felt… wrong. The usual scattered litter seemed too neat, the shadows too deliberately cast.
My eyes scanned the grimy brickwork, searching for any sign, any clue. Crow wasn’t one to be late without a reason. He was passionate, sometimes impulsive, but never disrespectful of a promised meeting. A prickle of unease crawled up my spine. The benefactor. The thought, unbidden, surfaced again. They were always there, a phantom presence, nudging us, shaping our path. Had they decided it was time for a detour?
