The air in the cramped studio apartment was thick with the scent of cheap incense and the lingering ghost of rain. It clung to everything, a damp, persistent reminder of the downpour that had driven us inside, seeking refuge from the city's indifferent sprawl. I’d never been one for loud gatherings, for the jostling press of bodies and the forced cheer that felt like a brittle facade. But tonight, the usual hum of my own invisibility felt amplified, a dull ache behind my ribs. Crow was here, though, a splash of quiet warmth in the room’s otherwise muted palette. It was the kind of music that burrowed under your skin, that made you feel things you’d rather keep buried. I nursed a lukewarm beer, the condensation slick against my fingers, and watched Crow. He shifted, his braid swaying, and for a moment, his eyes met mine. A small, tentative smile touched his lips, and something inside me eased. It was a fragile thing, this burgeoning connection, like a seedling pushing through concrete, improbable and yet undeniably alive.
