Chapter 9
The Mask Slips
During a group practice, Jinwoo makes a dismissive comment about Felix's condition when he thinks only Hyunjin can hear. The casual cruelty sends a chill down Hyunjin's spine.
The studio hummed with the familiar energy of a thousand tiny moments coalescing into one grand performance. The air, thick with the scent of sweat and determination, vibrated with the music that pulsed through the speakers. Hyunjin moved with a fluid grace, his body a conduit for the melody, his eyes, however, were not entirely on the choreography. They flickered, almost imperceptibly, towards the edges of the dance floor, towards the figures who filled the spaces left vacant by absence.
Felix’s absence was a gaping maw in their usual formation. It was a void that echoed in the music, a silence that screamed louder than any applause. Hyunjin felt it in his bones, a constant ache that no amount of polished performance could ever truly mask. He’d practiced the routine countless times, each movement ingrained in his muscle memory, yet today, it felt hollow. The joy, the shared spark that usually ignited between him and Felix on stage, was muted, a distant ember struggling against a rising wind.
He saw Jinwoo across the room, a vibrant splash of energy, his movements sharp and precise. Jinwoo was good, Hyunjin couldn’t deny that. He had a natural charisma, a way of drawing the eye even when he wasn’t the focal point. He’d stepped into Felix’s place seamlessly, his smile bright, his interactions with the other members always impeccably timed. The fans, starved for familiar faces and dynamic performances, had latched onto him. It was a natural progression, he told himself, a logical consequence of circumstance. Yet, a persistent knot of unease tightened in Hyunjin’s chest.
