The sterile scent of antiseptic was a stark contrast to the usual backstage perfume of hairspray and sweat that clung to Hyunjin’s senses. He adjusted the collar of his jacket, the soft wool feeling alien against his skin in this quiet, hushed space. The hospital room was bathed in the pale, diffused light of a late afternoon sun, painting long, gentle shadows across the linoleum floor. Felix lay propped against a mountain of pillows, his face paler than Hyunjin had ever seen it, a stark canvas against the crisp white of the sheets. Despite the tubes and wires that snaked around him, a small, hopeful smile touched his lips as Hyunjin entered.

“Hey,” Felix’s voice was a soft rasp, a fragile whisper that still managed to carry the warmth Hyunjin cherished. He reached out a hand, and Hyunjin, his own heart aching with a familiar, fierce protectiveness, clasped it firmly. Felix’s fingers were thinner than usual, the bones more prominent beneath the skin, but the grip was still there, a silent anchor in the storm.

“Hey yourself,” Hyunjin replied, his voice deliberately light, aiming for a tone that wouldn’t shatter the fragile peace. He settled onto the edge of the bed, careful not to disturb the delicate network of medical equipment. “How are you feeling today, my sunshine?”
