The days after Tjay stopped saying yes to every request felt like sunlight breaking through clouds. She walked through the hallways with her head a little higher, her shoulders a little looser. When a sophomore named Jenna asked if Tjay could see whether her mom would get the promotion she wanted, Tjay said no without flinching. Jenna shrugged and moved on. Nothing terrible happened.
Emma was right. The world did not collapse.
But some requests were harder to ignore. And one came from a girl Tjay barely knew, a quiet seventh grader named Mia whose eyes were red and swollen when she found Tjay at her locker on a Tuesday afternoon.
