The scent of turpentine and linseed oil, once the purest balm to Rene’s soul, now hung thick and cloying in the air of her studio, mirroring the stagnant feeling that permeated every corner of her life. Sunlight, which used to stream in a bold, encouraging swath across the wooden floorboards, now seemed filtered, weak, as if afraid to illuminate the truth of the space. She stood before the easel, brush suspended inches above the canvas, the bristles dry. The subject she’d chosen—a sweeping landscape of the rolling hills she’d moved here to paint—felt alien, mocking in its serenity.
