Despite the growing strain, Rene clings to the man she fell in love with. She tries to understand Deon's inner turmoil, hoping her love and patience can mend the cracks before they shatter their world.
The scent of turpentine and linseed oil was usually a comfort to Rene, a familiar blanket woven from late nights spent coaxing color onto canvas. Tonight, however, even the studio air felt heavy, clinging to her skin like damp wool. She stood before the easel, brush frozen mid-air. The painting—a vibrant landscape of the Tuscan hills they had visited last spring, the peak of their shared happiness—stared back, mocking her with its flawless blue sky. It was a lie, a beautiful, impossible lie that she desperately wanted to believe still mirrored their reality.
Deon was downstairs, pacing. She could hear the rhythmic thud of his expensive leather shoes against the polished oak floor, a sound that had transitioned from a comforting sign of his presence to a metronome counting down to the next confrontation.
It had been three weeks since the incident with Marco, the gallery owner. Marco had simply suggested that Rene might benefit from an independent exhibition, a show devoted entirely to her own vision, separate from the joint showcasing Deon favored. Deon had taken the suggestion as a declaration of war.
