Deon's paranoia escalates, fueled by unreasoning jealousy and a warped sense of reality. Rene finds herself walking on eggshells, her art becoming a silent canvas for her growing fear and confusion.
The studio air, usually thick with the comforting scent of linseed oil and turpentine, now felt thin, charged with an unseen tension that made Rene’s breath catch in her throat. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the golden beams, yet the light felt cold. She was attacking the canvas with broad, frantic strokes, trying to force the chaos inside her onto the linen, but the colors kept muddying, refusing to resolve into anything meaningful.
Deon hadn't called. That was the first seismic shift. He used to pepper her days with texts, calls, little affectionate demands to know where she was, who she was with, a constant tether that she had initially mistaken for devotion. Now, silence had replaced the incessant noise, and the silence was louder, more terrifying than any argument they’d had.
She stepped back from the easel, wiping a streak of cobalt blue onto her already stained jeans. Her latest piece was a landscape, meant to be soaring and open, symbolizing the freedom she felt finding this small, sun-drenched studio in the countryside. Now, it looked claustrophobic. The horizon line seemed to dip ominously, the sky pressing down like a lead weight.
