The rain had been a constant companion for years, a dull thrum against the grimy windows of Naythose’s rented room, mirroring the persistent ache in his soul. Each drop seemed to whisper Yalencia’s name, a mournful liturgy for a love lost. He traced the condensation on the glass, his finger leaving a fleeting trail, much like the hope that had once bloomed in his chest, now withered and brittle. The world had stolen her, and for a long time, Naythose had been content to let it bleed him dry in return. But the whispers, once soft lamentations, had begun to twist into something sharp, something insistent. They spoke of a lie, a grand deception woven with threads of malice.

Silas, with his eyes that had seen too much and his smile that promised nothing good, had been the first to plant the seed of doubt. He’d arrived like a phantom on Naythose’s doorstep, a crumpled map of the city’s underbelly clutched in his hand, a familiar scent of stale smoke and betrayal clinging to him. “You’re chasing ghosts, Naythose,” Silas had rasped, his voice like gravel grinding against stone. “Or worse, you’re chasing a ghost someone *wants* you to chase.”

Naythose had scoffed, the sound bitter and raw. “She’s dead, Silas. I saw her.”
