I hadn’t come to this place seeking God. I had come because the state mandated it, because my parole officer, a stern woman named Ms. Davies who seemed to possess an unnerving ability to see straight through my practiced lies, said this was the final bridge before freedom. Freedom, to me, had always meant the freedom to destroy myself. Now, the prospect of simple, quiet existence terrified me more than any jail cell had.
