The air in the cell was thick, a stagnant soup of stale sweat, disinfectant that never quite masked the deeper stink of decay, and the low, constant hum of institutional despair. I’d been counting the cracks in the ceiling tile for what felt like days—or maybe weeks; time warped inside these gray walls, stretching thin until it snapped without warning. Each fissure was a tributary leading back to some bad decision, some moment I’d chosen the easy, destructive path. But this time, something was different. The usual numbness, the chemical blanket I’d spent years cultivating, was fraying at the edges, threadbare from the last relapse.

I was lying on the thin mattress, the springs biting into my spine, when the memory hit. It wasn't a faint echo or a blurry image this time; it was a full sensory assault. I was maybe six years old, hiding under the kitchen table. The voices above were sharp, jagged, not like arguments my friends described, but something colder, meaner. I remember the smell of cheap wine and stale cigarette smoke clinging to the linoleum floor. My mother’s voice, usually soft when she wasn't angry, was a weapon, and then... the sound of shattering glass that wasn't a plate but something I knew meant pain was coming, either for her or for me.

I sat bolt upright, gasping, pulling the rough institutional blanket up to my chin as if it could ward off the phantom hands reaching for me in the darkness. For years, I had buried that—buried all of it—under layers of pills, then liquor, then the numbing routine of prison life. I had managed to convince myself, during my brief moments of clarity, that the trauma was separate from the choices I made, a sad backstory, but not the root cause. The drugs were the escape; the crime was merely the consequence of the escape. But lying there, sweat cold on my skin even though the cell block was humid, I realized the escape had failed. The darkness I thought I was escaping was the very air I breathed.
