Gryphon's Roar

Archius and Lyra are cornered by a fearsome gryphon, one of the Emperor's prized war beasts. Archius uses his Roman tactics, creating a diversion while Lyra finds a hidden path.

The air in the labyrinthine tunnels tasted of damp earth and something acrid, like burnt ozone. Archius’s muscles screamed with the exertion of their flight, each ragged breath a testament to the sheer, unadulterated terror that had gripped him moments before. Behind them, a sound like the rending of the very sky had echoed, a shriek of pure, predatory fury that had chilled him more than any blade. He risked a glance over his shoulder. The flickering torchlight, clutched precariously in Lyra’s hand, cast dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with unseen threats.

“Faster!” Lyra gasped, her voice a strained whisper that barely carried over the thudding of their own footsteps. Her usually composed features were etched with a desperation he’d only glimpsed once before, during their initial, clumsy escape from the grim confines of his cell.

Archius didn’t need the urging. His mind, honed by years of Roman discipline, was already cataloging their surroundings, searching for any advantage, any chink in the Emperor’s relentless pursuit. They had been so close to the city’s edge, so tantalizingly near the possibility of freedom, when the shriek had split the night. He’d seen it then, a silhouette against the bruised twilight sky, vast and terrible. A gryphon. Not just any beast, he now understood, but one of the Emperor’s prized war machines, a creature of myth and terror unleashed to hunt him.
