The scent of lavender and old paper clung to Clara like a second skin, a comforting aroma that Leo had inhaled since his first breath. Now, kneeling beside her, it was a balm to his frayed nerves, a reminder of a love that had always been, even when he hadn't been able to fully see it. The rain, which had seemed so menacing on his drive over, had softened into a gentle patter against the windowpanes, a hushed accompaniment to their quiet conversation.

"You drove too fast, didn't you?" Clara’s voice, though frail, held a playful lilt, a familiar teasing that cut through the heavy air of his fear. A wry, reassuring smile touched her lips, crinkling the corners of her eyes, eyes that had seen so much and still held an ocean of love for him.

Leo didn't bother to deny it. He dropped his keys onto the worn linoleum floor with a clatter, the sound swallowed by the room’s stillness. He crossed the short distance to her side, his knees finding the familiar dip in the linoleum, the exact spot where he’d knelt before her countless times as a child, clutching a scraped knee or a broken toy. But this time, the roles were subtly, profoundly blurred. He wrapped his arms around her, his embrace surprisingly strong, his face burying itself in the soft wool of her shawl. The scent, so deeply ingrained in his memory, washed over him, a tidal wave of home and safety. "I was scared, Mama," he whispered, the words thick with an emotion he’d been holding back for years, the unspoken fear of a future without her. "I realized... you're not going to be here forever."
