Dr. Lena Hanson found herself adrift in a sea of unsettling data. The charts and scans, usually her trusted compass, offered no solace. Each pregnant belly, a vessel of nascent life, was also, it seemed, a theater of war. The women spoke of visceral battles, of unseen forces clashing within their very cores, and Lena, a woman whose life was built on tangible evidence, felt a disquieting tremor ripple through her carefully constructed reality. The word "spiritual" hung in the air like a phantom breath, a concept she’d long ago relegated to the realm of outdated folklore.
She sat in her sterile office, the hum of the medical equipment a familiar lullaby, yet tonight it sounded discordant, a mocking counterpoint to the women’s increasingly frantic testimonies. Elara Vance, in particular, was a conundrum. Her eyes, usually bright with a quiet intelligence, now held a haunted depth. Her descriptions of the internal skirmishes were not the ramblings of a fevered mind, but rather the precise, albeit terrifying, accounts of a participant. Lena had run every test imaginable – advanced imaging, blood work, genetic screenings. Nothing. The babies were developing normally, the mothers’ vitals were stable, yet the distress was palpable, a storm brewing beneath the placid surface of medical normalcy.
“It’s not real, Elara,” Lena had said, her voice firm, though a tiny knot of doubt had begun to tighten in her stomach. “It’s a manifestation of stress, of anxiety. Pregnancy can do strange things to the mind.”
