The Shadowed Contract

The air in the common room of the Whispering Raven inn was thick with the smell of stale ale, pipe smoke, and the metallic tang of sweat. Outside, the frontier town of Oakhaven huddled against a biting wind, a collection of rough-hewn timber and determined grit. Inside, Captain Valerius, his scarred face illuminated by the flickering firelight, spread a map across a scarred table. Around him, the hardened faces of the Crimson Blades – Kael, the hulking brute with a perpetually grim expression; Elara, her twin daggers glinting even in the dim light; and Silas, the wiry tracker whose eyes seemed to miss nothing – leaned in, their expressions a mixture of anticipation and wariness.

Borgen, perched on a stool that creaked ominously under his weight, felt a familiar knot of anxiety tighten in his gut. This was it. His first real mission with the Crimson Blades. He’d spent weeks proving himself, enduring the sneers and sidelong glances, the muttered insults about his size and his upbringing. He’d hauled more weight than any two men, fought with a ferocity born of desperation, and even managed to earn a grudging nod from Valerius after a sparring session that left the captain’s practice sword splintered. But this was different. This was a contract, a real job that meant the difference between coin in their pockets and empty bellies.

"The contract is from Lord Kaelen of the Iron Peaks," Valerius began, his voice a low rumble that cut through the tavern’s din. "He’s lost a caravan. Not just any caravan, mind you. It was carrying vital supplies, magically imbued artifacts meant for his northern garrisons. The last known location was near the Whisperwood, a notoriously dangerous stretch of frontier."
