Chapter 7
Lyra's Curious Gaze
Agile scout Lyra observes Borgen, seeing past the monstrous exterior. A tentative understanding forms between them, offering Borgen a flicker of acceptance within the harsh mercenary life.
Lyra watched him from the shadowed eaves of the makeshift camp. Borgen, a mountain of a boy, sat hunched by the dying embers of the fire, his massive frame a stark silhouette against the bruised twilight sky. Even at rest, he radiated an untamed power, a raw, burgeoning strength that made the other Crimson Blades fidget and cast nervous glances his way. They muttered amongst themselves, their hushed words like the rustle of dry leaves – ‘ogre spawn,’ ‘troll-kin,’ ‘freak of nature.’ Lyra heard it all, the fear, the revulsion, but she also saw something else in the way Borgen’s enormous hands, calloused and scarred, moved with a surprising gentleness as he cleaned a discarded shield.
He was a puzzle, a paradox. The stories whispered about him were of a brute, a mindless beast who haunted the desecrated battlefields, growing fat on the spoils of the dead. But Lyra, with her sharp eyes and even sharper instincts, saw the boy beneath the colossal frame. She saw the flicker of loneliness in his deep-set eyes, the way he flinched inwardly when the casual barbs were thrown his way, even when he pretended not to hear. She saw the quiet determination etched onto his young face, the unspoken yearning for something more than the grim existence he’d carved out for himself.
Captain Valerius had taken a gamble, a significant one, in allowing Borgen to even join their ranks. Lyra knew the Captain was a man who valued results above all else, but even he couldn’t entirely ignore the unease he’d felt, the whispers of doubt that rippled through his company. Borgen’s sheer size was an undeniable asset, a walking battering ram, but it also bred fear and suspicion. Lyra, herself an outsider in many ways, felt a kinship with the ostracized giant. She’d spent her own childhood navigating the treacherous currents of a world that rarely understood those who were different.
