The dust of a hundred forgotten battles swirled around Borgen’s massive boots, a familiar, almost comforting scent. He stood on the cusp of the Ash Plains, the wind whipping his coarse, dark hair across his face. Behind him lay the flickering warmth of the Crimson Blades’ campfire, a sound of rough camaraderie that had, in the span of mere weeks, become the closest thing to home he’d known since those hellish days. Before him, the road stretched, a ribbon of uncertainty that called to a deeper, more primal need. Vengeance.

Captain Valerius had offered him a place, a gruff acceptance born of necessity and perhaps a flicker of grudging respect. Borgen, the ‘ogre spawn,’ the ‘troll’s bastard,’ had proven his worth, not just with his impossible strength, but with a quiet tenacity that even the most hardened veterans couldn’t entirely dismiss. He’d taken blows that would have splintered bone and spilled the guts of lesser men, and he’d kept fighting, kept earning his keep. The mockery had lessened, replaced by a wary silence, and sometimes, a nod. Lyra, with her sharp eyes and even sharper wit, had been the first to treat him with something akin to curiosity, not just fear or disgust. She’d seen the boy beneath the monstrous frame, the flicker of hope in eyes that had seen too much death.

But even the camaraderie of the Crimson Blades, the promise of a steady coin and a roof over his head, couldn’t silence the gnawing hunger in his gut. It wasn’t the hunger for food, though he always had a hearty appetite. It was the hunger for answers. The Strangers. Their name was a curse whispered on the wind, a specter that haunted his dreams. They had descended like a blight, their metal monstrosities spewing fire and their faceless soldiers cutting through his village like a scythe through wheat. His family… their faces, their laughter… all reduced to ash and memory. He carried their ghosts within him, a constant ache that no amount of healing could mend.
