The air in the tunnel was thick with the metallic tang of old oil and the ever-present, unsettling hum of the city’s heart. Elias, his knuckles white against the rough stone wall, felt the vibrations thrumming through his very bones. Beside him, Lyra’s breath was a steady, reassuring presence, her hand a warm weight on his arm. They were at the precipice, the mouth of the hidden passage that led directly into the belly of the beast – the Nexus.
“Remember, Elias,” Lyra’s voice was a low rasp, barely audible above the mechanical groan of the Nexus drawing closer, “this is not about vengeance. It’s about freedom. For Silas, for all of them.”
Elias nodded, his gaze fixed on the sliver of blinding light that marked the tunnel’s end. Silas. The man’s gaunt face, etched with a despair so profound it had hollowed him out, flashed in his mind. He could still feel the faint, flickering spark of Silas’s soul, a dying ember that had ignited Elias’s resolve. He wouldn't let that spark be extinguished completely.
