The scent of despair clung to my bakery like stale yeast, a far cry from the usual comforting aroma of warm bread. My prize baguette recipe, the culmination of years of whispered secrets and flour-dusted dreams, was gone. Vanished, as if spirited away by the very pixies who supposedly danced in the moonlight. The Grand Baking Competition was tomorrow, and without my masterpiece, ‘Pierre’s Perfect Pastries’ would crumble.

The village, usually a cheerful hum of activity, now buzzed with an unsettling undercurrent of suspicion. Every averted gaze, every hushed conversation felt like an accusation. Agnes Perrault, with her perpetually pursed lips and eyes that gleamed with a competitive fire, was the obvious suspect. Her bakery, ‘Agnes’ Artisan Breads’, was respectable, but it lacked the spark, the *je ne sais quoi* that drew the villagers to mine like moths to a flame. She’d always been jealous, I knew, of the adoration my loaves received. But theft? It seemed too… daring for Agnes.

Yesterday’s encounter with her had been a fruitless dance of deflection and veiled threats. She’d denied everything, of course, her voice as brittle as a day-old croissant, but the underlying tension was palpable. She’d even tried to point a finger at a shadowy figure she claimed to have seen lurking near my back door, a description so vague it could apply to half the village after dusk. Yet, a nagging feeling persisted. Agnes was too eager to deflect, too quick to offer alternative theories.
