The morning air in Belle Reve was usually a symphony of birdsong and the gentle clatter of early risers. Today, however, it was thick with a different kind of sound: the agitated hum of whispered conversations, the rustle of nervous skirts, and the occasional, sharp intake of breath. My own breath felt tight in my chest, a physical manifestation of the panic that had gripped me since the discovery. My recipe, my beautiful, golden-crusted masterpiece, was gone. Vanished into the pre-dawn gloom, leaving behind only a faint, unsettling scent of… something metallic, like old coins.

The Grand Baking Competition was less than twenty-four hours away. My bakery, ‘Pierre’s Perfect Pastries,’ was the heart of this village, its warm, yeasty aroma a constant comfort. And I, Pierre Dubois, was its proud, if slightly anxious, custodian. My baguette recipe wasn’t just a collection of ingredients and instructions; it was a legacy, passed down from my mentor, infused with my own love and a sprinkle of something indefinable that made it sing. To have it stolen now, on the cusp of the most important day of the year, felt like a physical blow.

The villagers, usually so cheerful, now eyed each other with a suspicion that pricked at my conscience. Every baker in Belle Reve was a potential contestant, and therefore, a potential thief. The list of usual suspects was short, but each name carried a weight of its own. There was old Madame Dubois, bless her heart, whose arthritic hands could barely knead dough anymore, but her eyes, sharp as any needle, missed nothing. Then there was young Antoine, whose ambition often outstripped his talent, always looking for a shortcut. And, of course, there was Agnes Perrault.
