A Secret Unfurled
Baby discovers a hidden compartment in Leo's bag, revealing letters and mementos that hint at a life and a burden he never shared. The truth, or a part of it, begins to surface, shaking her trust.
The afternoon sun, a hazy golden orb filtered through the dense canopy of the ancient forest, dappled the forest floor in shifting patterns of light and shadow. Baby, her heart still thrumming with the thrill of their recent discovery – a hidden waterfall cascading into a jade pool – found herself humming a tuneless melody. Leo was a few paces ahead, his backpack a familiar, comfortable weight on his broad shoulders, his laughter echoing through the trees as he pointed out an unusually shaped mushroom to her. It was moments like these, simple and pure, that made her feel as though she could float.
They had stopped to rest by a gnarled oak, its roots like ancient, arthritic fingers clutching the earth. Leo, ever restless, had begun to rummage through his pack, searching for his water canteen. Baby watched him, a soft smile playing on her lips, cataloging the curve of his jaw, the way his dark hair curled at his nape, the easy grace in his movements. It was then, as he shifted the worn leather satchel, that her gaze fell upon a section of the bag she hadn't paid much attention to before. A small, almost imperceptible seam, tucked away beneath a buckle that looked more decorative than functional. Curiosity, that old, familiar itch that had always driven her, prickled at her.
“What’s that?” she asked, her voice light, casual, as if she were merely commenting on a bird’s song.
