The arctic wind, a relentless sculptor of ice and snow, was a distant memory. Here, in the belly of the Stardust Serpent, a repurposed alien craft humming with barely contained energy, the only chill was the one that seeped into Aris Thorne’s bones. He gripped the smooth, organic-feeling controls, the material flexing subtly beneath his gloved fingers. Ahead, the panoramic viewport – a shimmering field of force – displayed Earth, a breathtaking swirl of blue and white, now marred by a creeping, crystalline blight.
It had begun subtly, a faint distortion in the upper atmosphere, like heat haze over a desert road. Then, the haze resolved itself into geometric patterns, impossibly sharp and intricate, reflecting the sun with a cold, blinding brilliance. The Crystalline Devourer. It wasn’t a ship, not in any conventional sense. It was a sprawling, living architecture of light-refracting facets, each one an infinitesimal part of a greater, predatory whole. It moved with an unnerving grace, a cosmic jellyfish drifting towards its next meal, its iridescent tendrils already brushing the thermosphere.
“Aurora,” Aris’s voice was a tight rasp, barely audible above the ship’s thrum. “Status report.”
