The stale air of the dormitory clung to Copelynn like a damp shroud, a stark contrast to the crisp, wild scents that usually filled her waking hours. Here, the smell of cheap cooking oil and unwashed bodies was a constant assault, a far cry from the pine and damp earth of her village. She sat on the edge of her cot, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, the rough wool of her tunic scratching against her skin. Her roommates, a gaggle of girls with sharp eyes and sharper tongues, chattered amongst themselves, their voices a low, grating hum that did little to soothe her frayed nerves.

Her dreams, however, were a different matter. They were vivid, almost tangible, a swirling kaleidoscope of images and sensations that left her breathless even in the mundane reality of Aetheria Academy. Last night, the dream had been particularly insistent. She’d seen a girl, her face obscured by shadow but her spirit radiating a fierce, defiant light. The girl was kneeling in the dirt, tending to something small and trembling. And then, a flash of searing heat, a jagged mark on an arm, and a deep, resonant hum that vibrated through Copelynn’s very bones. It was a feeling she’d experienced before, a deep, internal thrum that mirrored the pulse of the earth itself.

A sudden shift in the room’s atmosphere drew her attention. The usual cacophony of chatter died down, replaced by a palpable tension. Lyra Solari had entered, her expression a mask of carefully controlled turmoil. Copelynn watched her, a strange pull drawing her gaze. There was something about Lyra, a quiet strength that resonated with the same hidden currents Copelynn felt within herself. She saw the folded parchment in Lyra’s hand, the way her knuckles were white as she gripped it. A shiver traced its way down Copelynn’s spine. The dream, it had to be connected.
