Chapter 7
Echoes of Meica
Copelynn's arrival brings whispers of the Tribe of Meica. Her mother's exile and lack of records raise questions, hinting at a hidden lineage and a forgotten history.
The stale air of the low-tier dorms clung to Lyra like a damp shroud, thick with the scent of cheap cooking oil and the pervasive dampness that seemed to seep from the very walls. Her roommates, a trio of perpetually bored girls who communicated in hushed giggles and pointed glances, barely registered her entrance. The Outer Dead Zone. A place whispered about in hushed tones, a desolate expanse where only the most desperate, or the most foolish, were sent. A death sentence, disguised as an academic exercise. But it was the final paragraph that twisted the knot in her stomach into a cold, hard ball of dread. “Pursuant to Academy Code 14-B, any beast failing to achieve a Grade-D ranking during the Mid-Term Trials will be deemed a genetic contaminant. To preserve the purity of the state's taming lineages, all failed beasts will be immediately confiscated and culled.”
